The central government has instructed state authorities to closely monitor LPG distribution and prevent panic buying or hoarding of cooking gas cylinders. The direction comes amid reports of increased bookings and concerns about supply availability in certain areas.
Officials have emphasised that domestic LPG supply remains sufficient and that measures are being taken to maintain stable distribution while addressing public concerns, as per The Economic Times report.
The issue was discussed during a meeting chaired by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, which included chief secretaries and directors general of police from various states.
During the discussion, officials were asked to ensure that supply concerns do not escalate into law and order problems. States have been advised to monitor LPG distribution closely and take action against hoarding and black marketing.
Petroleum Secretary Niraj Mittal informed the meeting that domestic LPG and natural gas supply remain a priority for the government.
Authorities clarified that there is no shortage of LPG for household use, and the public has been urged not to engage in panic buying. Officials also noted that maintaining orderly distribution is essential to avoid unnecessary disruptions in supply.
The government clarified that recent distribution restrictions apply mainly to commercial establishments.
Essential services such as hospitals and schools are exempt from these restrictions to ensure that critical facilities continue to receive uninterrupted cooking fuel supplies.
Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare noted that prices of essential commodities remain stable. The government is currently monitoring around 40 key items to track supply conditions and price trends across the country, the report added.
The review is part of broader efforts to ensure that supply disruptions do not lead to sudden price increases or shortages.
Officials stated that the Centre is exploring additional supply sources to maintain adequate availability of LPG. As a temporary alternative during supply pressure, households may also consider the use of electric induction cooking appliances where feasible, according to the report.
State governments have been advised to take several operational steps, including:
Authorities have also been asked to appoint designated officials to handle consumer grievances, following systems used during the COVID-19 pandemic.
