Recent geopolitical tensions, with airspace restrictions in Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, and Jordan, are significantly impacting Indian airlines and travellers. These closures are forcing flights from India to Europe and North America to take much longer, more complex routes.
Pakistan has long closed its airspace to Indian carriers. The recent Israel-Iran conflict added more closures, limiting direct routes from India. Flights now detour over the Arabian Sea, through Saudi Arabia, Egypt, or Central Asia, adding hours to journeys. Some even make unplanned stops for refuelling.
Longer routes mean more fuel and significantly higher operational costs for airlines. They also face new "overflight fees" for transit countries. Extended flight times strain crews, potentially leading to fatigue and impacting pilot rest rules. Air India has already rerouted or turned back 16 international flights.
Passengers are facing longer travel times and higher airfares, especially on transcontinental flights. Last-minute cancellations are common, often without alternative flights. Extended layovers, forced rebookings, and luggage issues are adding to the stress.
Missed connecting flights, unplanned hotel stays, and unexpected visa changes can lead to additional expenses and significant inconvenience. Travellers are reporting considerable frustration with these disruptions.
This disruption hits at the worst possible time for Indian air travel. June to August is peak season for international departures due to summer holidays. The added strain, coming after a tragic crash in Ahmedabad, makes the situation even more challenging for the aviation industry.

The ongoing airspace restrictions reveal the delicate balance of global air travel and how quickly regional politics can affect it. While airlines adapt, passengers should prepare for longer journeys, potential disruptions, and possibly higher travel costs in the foreseeable future.
