Indian Railways has approved a ₹755 crore project to construct a 3rd railway line between Champa and Korba on the South East Central Railway (SECR) network, as per a PIB report.

The project will cover a distance of 42km and exclude the Madwarani-Saragbundia section, which had already been sanctioned earlier.

Coal Output Behind Capacity Requirement

The Champa-Korba section connects coalfields operated by South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) and Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) with the national railway network and the Mumbai-Howrah High Density Corridor.

The 2 coal producers currently have a combined production capacity of about 247 million tonnes per annum. This is expected to increase to nearly 450 million tonnes, creating additional demand for rail transportation.

Freight and Passenger Traffic on the Section

The route presently carries around 55 pairs of freight trains and 10 pairs of passenger trains every day. Railway officials expect coal traffic on the corridor to increase by nearly 200 million tonnes in the coming years.

The 3rd line is expected to support additional freight movement of 5.95 million tonnes annually and create capacity for 2 extra passenger train services in each direction.

Operational Changes Expected

Freight trains on the section currently face average delays of around 5 minutes in each direction because of congestion. The additional line is expected to reduce waiting time and improve train movement on the route.

According to Railway estimates, the project could generate annual net earnings of about ₹85 crore, including ₹82 crore from freight traffic and ₹3 crore from coaching services.

Operational savings from lower freight detention have been estimated at around ₹1.30 crore per year.

Conclusion

The Champa-Korba 3rd line project is intended to add rail capacity on a key coal transport route in Chhattisgarh. The additional track is to support rising freight demand while easing congestion on the existing section.
