Master Limited Partnership (MLP)

MLPs, or master limited partnerships, function similarly to REITs, but with a broader scope in terms of industry investments. Unlike REITs, which are restricted to real estate investments, MLPs can invest in a variety of industries. Both types of investments trade on the New York Stock Exchange and must distribute a majority of their earnings to shareholders in the form of dividends.
