On June 18, 2025, Vodafone Idea (Vi) announced a major partnership with US-based satellite company AST SpaceMobile to deliver mobile network access directly to smartphones via satellites. The ₹30,000 crore ($3.6 billion) deal aims to improve mobile connectivity in remote and underserved areas of India.
AST SpaceMobile builds satellites that offer 4G and 5G services directly to regular smartphones—no routers, apps, or extra equipment needed. Unlike Elon Musk’s Starlink, which provides satellite broadband via hardware kits, AST's technology allows mobile phones to connect straight to space-based networks.
India has over 1.1 billion mobile users, yet many regions still lack strong connectivity. This new partnership is expected to complement existing terrestrial infrastructure, especially in difficult terrains where laying cables or building towers is a challenge.
Chris Ivory, CCO of AST SpaceMobile, said the aim is to remove barriers to communication and ensure that even the remotest areas have access to reliable mobile networks. Vi’s Chief Marketing Officer, Avneesh Khosla, added that this move aligns with their vision to connect every Indian through innovative technology.
Vi’s announcement comes amid increasing interest in satellite connectivity in India. Earlier in March 2025, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel revealed their partnerships with SpaceX’s Starlink to distribute satellite broadband across rural regions. Unlike AST's direct-to-phone model, these services still require hardware.
As of June 18, 2025, Vodafone Idea share price closed at ₹6.56, down 0.61% for the day. The stock opened at ₹6.60, hit a high of ₹6.70, and a low of ₹6.52 during the session. The company's market capitalisation stood at ₹71,070 crore. It has no recorded P/E ratio or dividend yield. Over the past 52 weeks, the stock has touched a high of ₹19.18 and a low of ₹6.46.

Vi’s strategic alliance with AST SpaceMobile marks a transformative move in India’s telecom sector. By bypassing traditional network infrastructure, this satellite-to-phone technology promises to bring seamless 4G and 5G access to areas long left behind. If executed well, this could not only boost Vi’s reputation but also reshape digital inclusion across the country.
