Many households in Mumbai and across India face a frustrating and costly problem during AC servicing: "gas leak". This requires an expensive refill, which often leads to a ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 payment. But what if this is a scam?

Sometimes, consumers end up paying for gas that wasn't needed. Hence, every AC owner must understand how these deceptive tactics work to protect their hard-earned money and ensure genuine service.

Understanding the "Phantom Leak" Trick

Technicians often claim gas leaks without proper testing. Real leaks are rare, usually from damage or corrosion. This is because experts suggest that refrigerants don't just disappear. If your technician suggests a refill without performing a comprehensive leak test, it's a strong indicator to be cautious.

Deliberate Gas Release and Gauge Tampering

Some technicians secretly release gas from the AC unit to create false low-pressure readings. This makes you think a refill is necessary. However, before making any payment, you must check the PSI reading. Remember, for gases like R32 or R410, the pressure should typically be 130-140 PSI when the unit is running, while for R22, it should be 60-65 PSI.

How to Protect Yourself: No Leak Test? Walk Away.

Generally, manufacturers state that refrigerant lasts 10-15 years without a confirmed leak. It is a common upsell scam about being asked to refill gas yearly. Legit AC service includes a nitrogen-based leak test before any refill. If your technician skips this and jumps to gas, they likely aren't trustworthy. Refuse the service and find a reliable professional instead.
