The Tata Power Company Limited has expanded its clean energy collaboration with Druk Green Power Corporation Limited (DGPC) in Bhutan through an amendment to their existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The partnership will now jointly develop over 5 GW of hydropower capacity in Bhutan, strengthening regional renewable energy cooperation.
The latest amendment adds the 404 MW Nyera Amari I & II Integrated Hydropower Project to the existing project pipeline, increasing the total identified capacity under the partnership to 5,033 MW from the earlier planned 4,500 MW.
The Nyera Amari I & II project marks another milestone in the long-standing relationship between Tata Power and DGPC. The agreement was signed in the presence of Bhutan Prime Minister Lyonchhen Tshering Tobgay.
The signing ceremony included senior officials from both organisations, including Tata Power CEO & Managing Director Dr. Praveer Sinha and DGPC Managing Director Chhewang Rinzin.
The expanded partnership aligns with Bhutan’s broader vision to increase its total power generation capacity to 25,000 MW by 2040, supporting both domestic energy security and regional energy integration.
Under the collaboration, Tata Power and DGPC are jointly developing a diversified portfolio of hydropower projects in Bhutan. These include Khorlochhu (600 MW), Dorjilung (1,125 MW), Gongri Reservoir with Jeri Pumped Storage projects (combined 2,540 MW), Chamkharchhu IV (364 MW), and the newly added Nyera Amari I & II (404 MW).
The companies are also planning to jointly develop 500 MW of solar photovoltaic projects in Bhutan.
Work has already commenced on the Khorlochhu and Dorjilung hydropower projects, which together account for nearly 35% of the total planned portfolio.
Tata Power stated that the partnership reinforces its position as a leading clean energy player in the region. The collaboration is expected to help unlock Bhutan’s hydropower potential while supporting sustainable energy growth across South Asia.
The relationship between Tata Power and DGPC dates back more than 15 years, beginning with the commissioning of the 126 MW Dagachhu Hydropower Project in 2008, Bhutan’s first public-private hydropower partnership.
On May 8, 2026, Tata Power share price opened at ₹438.10, touching the day’s low at ₹434.70, as of 11:32 AM on the NSE.
