NTPC Aims for 8 GW Green Energy Boost in FY27: Reports

NTPC Limited plans to add 8 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity during FY27 through its subsidiary NTPC Green Energy Limited, according to The Moneycontrol report. The addition is to take NTPC Group’s total renewable energy capacity to more than 18 GW.
During FY26, the company added 5.5 GW of renewable capacity across solar, wind, and pumped storage projects. NTPC has been increasing renewable capacity alongside conventional power generation projects as electricity demand continues to rise.
Thermal Capacity Addition
The company has also targeted the addition of 1.6 GW of thermal power capacity during the current financial year. NTPC recently commissioned an 800-megawatt (MW) unit at Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited.
Another 800 MW unit at the same project is to be commissioned by February 2027, sources said. The company currently has around 16.5 GW of thermal power capacity under construction.
The NTPC Group operates more than 90 GW of installed generation capacity across the country, while nearly 32 GW of additional capacity is under various stages of development and construction.
Coal Output and SNG Project
NTPC plans to increase coal production from its captive mines to 290 million tonnes in FY27, compared with 280 million tonnes in FY26, according to the official.
Separately, the company is working on a coal-to-synthetic natural gas (SNG) project in partnership with Engineers India Limited. A detailed project report for the proposed facility is expected during the current fiscal year.
The project will use high-ash Indian coal from NTPC’s captive mines to produce synthetic natural gas for gas-based power stations and captive power generation. The proposed facility is expected to produce 0.5 million tonnes of SNG annually.
Nuclear Expansion Plans
NTPC is also pursuing nuclear power expansion through NTPC Parmanu Urja Nigam Limited. The company is conducting a study for a proposed 2.8 GW nuclear power project in Bihar’s Banka district and is expected to be completed by October.
NTPC has earlier stated that it aims to achieve 149 GW of installed power generation capacity by 2032, including 60 GW from renewable energy sources.
