Larsen & Toubro’s Transportation Infrastructure business vertical has secured a significant order for the construction of an arterial cable-stayed bridge over the Muri Ganga River in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.
The project is aimed at creating a robust and reliable transport link to Sagar Island, one of the state’s most strategically and culturally important regions.
As part of the project, L&T will construct a 2+2 lane extradosed cable-stayed bridge with a total length of 3.2 km and a maximum span of 177 metres. The scope also includes the development of approach roads measuring 0.9 km on the Kakdwip side and 0.65 km on the Sagar Island side.
The bridge will be equipped with advanced traffic management systems to ensure smooth vehicle flow and enhanced safety.
In addition, the structure will feature a bridge health monitoring system to track real-time performance and structural integrity. Architectural bridge lighting and hybrid street lighting will also be installed, along with all essential road furniture, making the project both functional and visually distinctive.
The bridge will provide direct, all-weather connectivity to Sagar Island, which currently relies heavily on ferry services. These ferry operations are frequently disrupted during adverse weather conditions, causing inconvenience and delays. Once completed, the bridge is expected to significantly improve mobility for over two lakh residents of Sagar Island.
Improved connectivity will enhance access to healthcare, education, and employment opportunities, while also supporting smoother movement of goods and services. The project is expected to play a crucial role in improving the overall quality of life for island residents.
The bridge will also have a major impact on religious tourism. Sagar Island hosts the annual Ganga Sagar Mela, the second-largest religious congregation in India after the Kumbh Mela. The new bridge will ensure safer and more convenient travel for millions of devotees from across the country, particularly during peak pilgrimage periods.
Beyond its social and cultural importance, the bridge is expected to act as a catalyst for economic growth. Improved connectivity is likely to boost trade, tourism, and local businesses, creating new income opportunities and accelerating regional development.
On January 13, 2026, L&T share price (NSE: LT) opened at ₹4,028.00, touching the day’s low at ₹3,911.00, as of 10:41 AM on the NSE.
