Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) has achieved a major milestone in India's clean energy sector with the commissioning of a cumulative 3.37 Gigawatt-hour (GWh) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Khavda in Gujarat.
The company stated that the project represents the world's largest single-location battery storage deployment outside China and ranks among the fastest utility-scale battery storage projects executed globally.
The latest commissioning includes battery storage capacity added during March 2026, taking AGEL's total operational BESS capacity at Khavda to 3.37 GWh.
According to the company, the project was completed within 10 months of the commencement of on-site construction, highlighting the speed of execution.
The storage system is capable of storing enough renewable energy to supply nearly one million homes for an entire day.
The company noted that the facility can support peak electricity requirements equivalent to cities such as Indore and Chandigarh or even the entire state of Goa.
AGEL plans to add more than 10 GWh of battery storage capacity during FY27 and aims to scale its storage portfolio to 50 GWh over the next 5 years.
The company believes large-scale energy storage infrastructure will become increasingly important as renewable energy capacity expands across the country.
The project uses lithium-ion battery technology integrated with advanced energy management systems to improve operational efficiency, responsiveness, and reliability.
The facility has been strategically located within the Khavda renewable energy complex, where AGEL is developing a 30 GW renewable energy project, of which 9.9 GW is already operational.
As per the exchange filings, commenting on the development, Sagar Adani, Executive Director of AGEL, said, "Large-scale energy storage will play a defining role in the next phase of India's clean energy transition.
As renewable energy capacity scales rapidly, storage infrastructure becomes critical for delivering reliable, round-the-clock clean power. With the commissioning of the 3.37 GWh BESS at Khavda, AGEL is strengthening the foundation for resilient, dispatchable and flexible energy systems."
