Mazagon Dock Delivers Nilgiri Stealth Frigate and Surat Destroyer to Indian Navy

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) delivered 2 advanced warships to the Indian Navy on December 20, 2024. These include the Nilgiri, the first stealth frigate of Project 17A, and the Surat, the fourth destroyer of Project 15B.
Nilgiri Stealth Frigate
Nilgiri is the first ship in its class and features cutting-edge stealth technology, which makes it hard to detect. Designed indigenously by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, it boasts improved survivability, maneuverability, and advanced weapons and sensors. This ship can operate independently or as the flagship of a naval task force, showcasing India’s growing self-reliance in warship design and construction.
Surat Destroyer
Surat, the 4th ship in the Project 15B class, is a highly capable platform with a variety of advanced weapons, including Brahmos supersonic missiles and Barak-8 surface-to-air missiles. It has been designed for all-round capabilities, particularly against submarines, surface warships, and fighter aircraft. Surat was delivered ahead of schedule and is the most combat-ready platform in its class. With 72% indigenous content, the ship highlights India’s focus on the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.
