Vodafone Idea shares fell significantly after the Supreme Court postponed the verdict on the company’s adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues to October 6, 2025. The delay comes as the Central government, which owns 49% equity in the telecom operator, sought more time to explore a solution to the matter.

AGR Verdict Postponement Triggered Share Decline

On September 25, 2025, Vodafone Idea's share price fell by 6.5%, closing at ₹8.12. This sharp decline followed the Supreme Court’s decision to defer its verdict on the AGR dues case after the Centre requested more time. Prior to this, the case had already been deferred from September 19 to September 25. The company’s shares, which had shown minor recovery in early trade, rapidly reversed as court proceedings progressed.

Details of the AGR Dues and Legal Dispute

Vodafone Idea has challenged the Department of Telecom’s (DoT) additional AGR demand of ₹9,450 crore. The telecom firm argues that this demand exceeds the scope of the apex court’s earlier ruling. Out of the total, ₹2,774 crore arises from FY18-19 dues linked to Vodafone Idea post-merger, while ₹5,675 crore pertains to the pre-merger Vodafone Group. The company has sought a detailed reconciliation, claiming duplicated entries in the calculations made by the DoT.

Centre’s Position and Stake in Vodafone Idea

During the last hearing, the Centre clarified that it does not oppose Vodafone Idea’s plea. However, since it holds a 49% stake in the telecom company, though not classified as a promoter, it seeks adequate time to work out a feasible framework. The government has also reiterated that no further relief packages or transformation into a public sector enterprise are on the table at this stage.

Vodafone Idea Share Price Performance

On September 26, 2025, Vodafone Idea share price opened at ₹8.75 on NSE, above the previous close of ₹8.68. During the day, it surged to ₹8.79 and dipped to ₹7.90. The stock is trading at ₹8.12 as of 12:11 PM. The stock registered a significant decline of 6.45%.

Over the past week, it has declined by 3.22%, over the past month, it has moved up by 25.12%, and over the past 3 months, it has moved up by 12.15%.

Conclusion

Vodafone Idea’s share decline underscores market sensitivity around legal outcomes and government actions. With the AGR verdict now expected on October 6, 2025, investor focus will remain on how the court and the Centre approach debt resolution for the struggling telecom player.
