As per the news reports, Hyderabad-based Tata Advanced Systems has achieved a major milestone by setting up India’s first overseas defence manufacturing unit. Located in Berrechid, Morocco, the new facility marks a historic step in India’s journey from “Make in India” to “Make for the World.”
The plant will be inaugurated by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh during his official visit to Morocco on September 22–23.
The Berrechid unit will manufacture the Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP), a combat vehicle jointly developed by TASL and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). This is the first Indian defence manufacturing unit established on the African continent, showcasing India’s expanding footprint in global defence production.
The WhAP is an 8-wheel drive combat vehicle capable of operating on both land and water. It features advanced armour protection to safeguard against ballistic threats and landmines, making it a versatile platform for modern battlefield requirements.
The project reflects the successful collaboration between the private sector and India’s state defence research establishment.
Tata Advanced Systems is among India’s leading defence manufacturers, producing trucks, tanks, drones, and integrated systems. The company also supplies critical components and assembly line solutions for engines used in fighter aircraft, strengthening its position as a trusted partner in global defence supply chains.
