Electric car sales in India rose sharply in July 2026 as demand remained firm amid higher fuel prices, as per The Economic Times news report.
According to data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways' Vahan portal, 31,788 electric cars were registered during the month, compared with 17,509 units in July 2025.
The increase of 82% came even as the broader passenger vehicle market, including petrol, diesel, CNG and electric models, recorded 18% year-on-year growth.
The rise in volumes lifted electric vehicles' share of new passenger car registrations to 7.8% in July 2026. The figure stood at 5% in July last year and about 4% for calendar year 2025. Sales have remained strong since the US-Iran conflict began in late February, a period marked by higher fuel prices.
Between March and July, cumulative electric car sales increased 90% from a year earlier, while average monthly sales rose 68% to 28,543 units from 16,956 units recorded during October 2025 to February 2026.
Automakers are increasing production to meet the higher volume of orders. Maruti Suzuki said bookings for the e-Vitara have crossed 4,000 units a month, against a production capacity of around 2,000 units.
The company has also commissioned a 4th assembly line at its Hansalpur plant in Gujarat to expand output while continuing export supplies.
Kia India reported stronger demand for electric vehicles and recently introduced the Syros EV in the mainstream segment. Tata Motors said demand continues to remain higher than available supply, with component availability still affecting production levels despite consistent month-on-month growth.
Tata Motors held a 43% share of India's electric passenger vehicle market in July 2026, up from 38% in March 2026. Mahindra & Mahindra accounted for 24% of the market, followed by JSW MG Motor India at 18% and Maruti Suzuki at 5%.
Industry executives also noted that concerns related to charging infrastructure, vehicle range and reliability have reduced compared with previous years, supporting wider adoption.
