Impact Of GST 2.0 On Car Prices
Under the GST 2.0 framework, internal combustion engine and hybrid cars now fall into simplified tax slabs of 18% and 40%.
- Hatchbacks, compact sedans and compact SUVs are taxed at 18%.
- Larger cars and luxury models are taxed at 40%.
No compensation cess is applicable under this revised structure.
Comparison With GST 1.0
Earlier, under GST 1.0:
- All cars attracted a 28% GST.
- A compensation cess of 1% to 22% was added based on vehicle specifications.
- The overall tax burden ranged between 29% and 50%.
The new GST 2.0 system simplifies taxation and eliminates the cess component.
