Today, on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, banks across India and the major stock exchanges, BSE and NSE, will remain closed on account of Balipratipada, also known as Bali Pratipada or Vikram Samvant New Year Day. This day marks the end of the five-day Diwali celebrations, following Laxmi Puja and other festive rituals.

Significance of Balipratipada

Balipratipada is celebrated as part of the Diwali festival series. It is also referred to as Govardhan Puja or Balipadyami in different regions. The closure of banks and markets allows citizens to observe traditional rituals, exchange greetings, and manage family and financial activities around the festive period.

Upcoming Bank and Market Holidays

Following Balipratipada, the next scheduled holiday for banks and financial markets in 2025 is on Wednesday, November 5, for Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev. The last major holiday of the year will be Thursday, December 25, for Christmas.

Other festival-related bank holidays include Bhai Bij on October 23, Chhath Puja on October 27–28, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s Birthday on October 31. It is important to note that bank holidays may vary state-wise, and customers should check local notifications before planning transactions.
