Banks across several states in India are closed today, October 23, 2025, on account of Bhai Bij (Bhaidooj) and Chitragupt Jayanti. According to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) official holiday calendar for October, banks will remain closed in Gujarat, Nagaland, Sikkim, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Himachal Pradesh.
These closures are observed under the Negotiable Instruments Act, meaning over-the-counter services and cheque clearances will not be available in these states. However, online and digital banking services such as UPI, mobile banking, and net banking remain fully operational.
Apart from the states mentioned above, banks in other parts of India will function as usual on Thursday. Most banks, including SBI, Bank of India, and PNB, typically operate between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, while private lenders such as HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank follow timings between 9:30 AM and 4:30 PM (depending on the branch).
Here’s a quick look at the upcoming bank holidays for the month:
While banks in some states remain shut, the BSE and NSE are open for trading today, October 23, after remaining closed for 2 consecutive days for the Diwali festival (October 21 and 22). All segments, including equity, derivatives, commodities, and currency markets, will function normally.
