Amidst the thriving online food delivery market, a new digital scam has emerged through a fake website named 'Jio Eat'. This platform cleverly uses the Reliance Jio logo and falsely claims ties to Reliance Retail. It appears to offer food delivery across 15 major Indian cities, but it's designed purely for fraud.
'Jio Eat' attracts users with tempting offers, like any food item up to ₹500 for just ₹99 with free delivery. It claims 24/7 service without hidden fees and features popular restaurants. The website even includes fake privacy policies to look legitimate.
The scam activates during payment, which is only via debit/credit card. When placing an order, the received OTP is a significantly higher, unexpected amount. An unsuspecting user might enter this OTP without checking, leading to a substantial financial loss.
Despite being live for a short time, numerous complaints have already flooded social media. Users report large, unexpected sums being deducted from their accounts. This scam is notable because Reliance Retail has no plans to enter the food delivery space, making the fake site highly misleading. Moreover, these fraudsters actively promote the fake 'Jio Eat' platform through YouTube ads. This highlights the growing sophistication of online fraud.
The 'Jio Eat' scam underscores a worrying rise in digital fraud across India. The finance ministry reported 2.4 million incidents totalling ₹4,245 crore in the first 10 months of FY25. The RBI Governor has urged financial institutions to increase oversight to combat these cybersecurity risks.

The 'Jio Eat' scam serves as a critical warning for all online users. Always be extremely cautious, especially with enticing offers or unfamiliar platforms. Crucially, always double-check the transaction amount in OTP messages before authorising any payment to protect yourself from such sophisticated digital frauds.
