West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced a monthly allowance of ₹1,500 for unemployed youth who have passed the secondary examination (Class 10). The payment will be provided to job seekers aged between 21 and 40 years.
As per PTI reports, the assistance is part of the state’s Yuva Sathi programme and is meant for individuals who are currently unemployed. Beneficiaries should not be receiving support from other government schemes, except scholarships.
According to the chief minister, the allowance is intended to provide financial support while applicants search for employment.
The allowance was earlier scheduled to begin from April 1. However, the state government has advanced the rollout date to March 7.
Banerjee made the announcement during a public address on March 8, a day marked globally as International Women’s Day. She said the state decided to begin disbursing the allowance earlier than planned.
The payments will be made to eligible applicants who have already registered for the scheme.
The state government said close to 1 crore people between the ages of 21 and 40 have applied for the programme. The scheme covers individuals who have completed their secondary education and are currently without employment.
Students who are still studying may also receive the allowance if they are not beneficiaries of any other government schemes apart from scholarships.
The financial support is expected to act as interim assistance during the period between education and employment.
The chief minister said the state has undertaken various programmes to improve employment prospects. According to the government, the unemployment rate in West Bengal has declined by about 40 per cent.
Around 40 lakh people have received skill training through programmes such as Utkarsha Bangla. Of these, about 10 lakh individuals have already found employment.
The government has also connected trained candidates with industrial employers through online platforms. Training programmes are also underway in sectors such as the jute industry.
Banerjee also referred to ongoing infrastructure and industrial projects in the state. In total, 6 economic corridors are under construction to improve connectivity across West Bengal.
2 power plants with a combined capacity of 1,600 megawatts are being built in Salboni. The Deucha Pachami coal project in Birbhum district is expected to generate employment for around one lakh people.
According to the state government, around 1.5 crore people are currently employed in small and medium-scale industries across the state.
