West Bengal will be brought under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday, as per news reports.

The announcement was made through the Prime Minister’s official X account and comes after years of disagreement between the Centre and the previous state administration over the scheme’s implementation.

PM-JAY is the Centre’s flagship public health insurance programme. It provides annual health coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per family for secondary and tertiary hospitalisation.

The scheme is for economically weaker households and covers treatment at empanelled government and private hospitals across the country.

Political Change Clears Path

The rollout follows the recent West Bengal Assembly election results. Implementation of PM-JAY in West Bengal had remained stalled since the scheme was launched nationally due to differences between the Centre and the former state government.

The inclusion of the state is now expected to become one of the early welfare measures under the new administration.

In his statement, Modi said the scheme would provide affordable healthcare access to residents of the state.

Focus on Execution and Hospital Network

Officials familiar with the development said the timeline for implementation is under consideration and details regarding rollout are expected shortly. The next stage is likely to involve beneficiary identification and onboarding hospitals under the scheme’s network.

The portability feature under PM-JAY allows beneficiaries to access treatment at empanelled hospitals outside their home state. This is expected to benefit migrant workers and families travelling for employment or medical treatment.

West Bengal’s inclusion follows similar developments in Delhi and Odisha, where the scheme was introduced after changes in government. With this, another major state is set to join the national health insurance framework.

Conclusion

Officials said implementation details for PM-JAY in West Bengal are being finalised. The rollout is expected to begin after beneficiary identification and hospital onboarding processes are completed.
