The Maharashtra Government has identified 14,298 men who received benefits under the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana by allegedly registering as women, as per news reports. The scheme provides eligible women with monthly financial assistance of ₹1,500.

According to government data, these beneficiaries received payments for nearly 10 months. The total amount disbursed in such cases is estimated at ₹21.44 crore.

Cases Detected During Data Verification

The irregularities were detected during a review of beneficiary records carried out by the Department of Information and Technology. The exercise was part of a verification process launched after the scheme came into operation.

Officials found that some applicants had submitted incorrect details and documents while enrolling. The review brought to light cases where men had been included in a scheme reserved for women beneficiaries.

Number of Beneficiaries Falls After Review

The verification exercise was not limited to fraudulent registrations. Authorities also examined eligibility across the beneficiary database through e-KYC and other checks.

The exercise resulted in around 80 lakh beneficiaries being removed from the scheme. Following the revision, the number of active beneficiaries declined from about 2.4 crore to 1.7 crore.

Government employees, income-tax payers and women from households that did not meet the prescribed eligibility conditions were among those excluded from the list.

Government Signals Recovery Action

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the scheme initially allowed self-certification as many applicants did not have sufficient time to submit supporting documents during enrolment.

He said the verification was carried out later as expenditure under government welfare programmes is subject to audit. The review subsequently identified several categories of ineligible beneficiaries.

The state government has stated that recovery proceedings will be initiated against those who wrongly received payments. Authorities have also indicated that legal action may be considered in cases where money was obtained through forged documents or false declarations.

Conclusion

The beneficiary verification drive uncovered irregularities across the scheme, including fraudulent registrations. The state is now pursuing the recovery of wrongly disbursed funds.
