Government Reports Over 20.85 Lakh Rooftop Solar Installations Under PM Surya Ghar Scheme

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has released an update on the progress of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. The scheme was launched in February 2024 as a demand‑driven initiative for rooftop solar adoption across residential households with grid‑connected electricity connections.

According to the Ministry, the scheme has seen rapid uptake across states and Union Territories over the past 2 years. The government confirmed that the initiative continues to support households through Central Financial Assistance disbursed via the National Portal.

Scheme Framework and Access for Residential Consumers

The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana enables any residential consumer with a grid‑connected electricity connection to apply for rooftop solar installation. Applications are processed through the National Portal created specifically for the scheme.

The objective is to expand decentralised solar capacity through household‑level installations across the country. The Ministry stated that the scheme’s design allows beneficiaries to directly access financial support without intermediaries.

Installation Progress Since Scheme Launch

Since the launch of the scheme in February 2024, a total of 20,85,514 rooftop solar systems have been installed nationwide. These installations have benefited 26,14,446 households across states and Union Territories.

The Ministry reported a cumulative disbursement of ₹14,771.82 crore as Central Financial Assistance up to December 2025. State‑wise data on installation progress has been compiled and listed in the official annexure.

Estimated Renewable Energy Potential from Targeted Capacity

Under the scheme, it is estimated that rooftop solar installations in 1 crore households could generate 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity over their operational period. The Ministry noted that this level of generation could contribute significantly to India’s clean‑energy targets.

Over a 25‑year lifetime of the rooftop systems, the estimated reduction in CO₂ equivalent emissions stands at 720 million tonnes. These projections reflect the long‑term environmental benefits anticipated by the government.
