The Union health ministry has outlined an expansion of the Ayushman Bharat–Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana for the 2026–27 fiscal year, focusing on higher hospital utilisation, increased claims payouts and a wider hospital network.
For FY27, the ministry has set a target of 30 million hospital admissions under PMJAY, alongside a claims disbursal target of ₹36,000 crore.
This marks a 63% increase from the ₹22,000 crore earmarked for claims payments in FY26. Budget estimates for FY27 allocate ₹9,500 crore to the scheme, marginally higher than the ₹9,406 crore provided in FY26, representing a 0.9% rise.
The expansion plan includes empanelling 1,800 additional government and private hospitals, which would raise the total number of empanelled facilities by about 8%.
At present, more than 33,000 hospitals are part of the PMJAY network, comprising 17,505 public hospitals and around 15,600 private healthcare centres.
Launched in 2018, PMJAY provides health cover of ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation, covering around 550 million individuals or 123.4 million families across the country.
Eligibility under the scheme is determined using deprivation criteria for rural households and occupational criteria for urban households, based on the Socio-Economic Caste Census 2011.
As per the PMJAY dashboard, over 431 million Ayushman Cards have been created so far. Alongside expansion, the government has set a target to keep the rate of frauds detected against total claims submitted at 1% in FY27.

With higher admission targets, increased claims payouts and a broader hospital network, the health ministry’s FY27 plans for PMJAY signal a continued push to scale public health insurance coverage while maintaining operational oversight.
