The Union government has sanctioned 5000 rural houses under Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana Gramin to support families displaced by violence in Manipur. The decision followed a meeting in New Delhi between Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh.

Housing Support Under PMAY-G

The approved homes will be built during FY2025-26 to rehabilitate internally displaced persons affected by the ethnic unrest that began in May 2023. The state had earlier submitted a proposal seeking additional housing support for affected households.

Alongside the housing approval, the Union Rural Development Ministry opened a special Awaass+ 2024 survey window to identify eligible beneficiaries. The state has also been permitted to continue registering displaced families under a dedicated PMAY-G project. In addition, households that had earlier received PMAY-G assistance but lost their homes in the violence will be eligible for fresh sanction.

Resettlement Progress and Broader Context

The violence between Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and hills-based Kuki-Zo groups has resulted in at least 260 deaths and displaced thousands. In January, the state government announced a target to resettle 10000 displaced families by March 31. Officials had stated that 16500 internally displaced persons had already been resettled at that stage.

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan assured support for restoring peace and normalcy in the state during his discussions with the Manipur leadership, which included Deputy Chief Ministers Nemcha Kipgen and Losii Dikho

Conclusion

With the clearance of 5000 additional rural homes and special survey provisions, the Centre has expanded housing support for displaced families in Manipur as the state continues efforts to stabilise and resettle affected communities.
