Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced a transformative change for aspiring students under the Student Credit Card Scheme, as per news reports. With a focus on promoting higher education, the state government will now offer interest-free loans to students who pass their class 12 examinations, removing the earlier interest rates applied to such educational loans.

Interest-Free Loans: Key Changes for All Eligible Students

Under the revised Student Credit Card Scheme, students who have successfully cleared their class 12 board exams will be eligible for education loans up to ₹4,00,000 without any interest rate. Previously, male applicants were subject to 4% interest, while female, differently-abled, and transgender applicants were offered loans at 1%. This change brings uniform benefits, eliminating financial barriers for all.

Enhanced Repayment Options for Better Financial Accessibility

The scheme also introduces extended repayment periods to provide further relief. Students borrowing up to ₹2,00,000 now have 84 months (7 years) to repay, compared to the previous 60-month timeline.

For loans above ₹2,00,000, the repayment window has been extended to a maximum of 120 months (10 years), helping reduce the stress of early repayment post-graduation.

Student Credit Card Scheme: In Operation Since 2016

The Student Credit Card Scheme was launched on October 2, 2016, as part of Bihar's education initiative. Since its inception, thousands have benefited by gaining access to institutions for higher learning. With the latest update, the scheme becomes even more inclusive and supportive, emphasising the state's commitment to education-driven empowerment.

The initiative is expected to enhance enrolment in higher education institutions, thus preparing a skilled and educated workforce for the future of Bihar and the country.

Conclusion

With the rollout of interest-free student loans and extended repayment options, Bihar takes a significant step forward in making quality education more accessible. The revised Student Credit Card Scheme is set to benefit thousands of students annually, shaping a brighter academic and professional future for the youth of the state.
