Microsoft Wins $750 Million Azure Deal as AI Firm Perplexity Expands Beyond AWS

Microsoft announced a $750 million 3-year Azure cloud agreement with AI startup Perplexity AI, expanding the startup’s access to a range of frontier models.
Microsoft Azure deal with Perplexity AI
The agreement allows Perplexity to deploy AI models through Microsoft Foundry, including those from OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI. The 3-year term provides Perplexity with dedicated Azure infrastructure and model integration tools.
Deal structure and model access
Perplexity will use Foundry to run workloads that combine multiple vendor models, giving customers flexibility in choosing the best model for each task.
Microsoft highlighted that over 1,500 Foundry customers have already used OpenAI and Anthropic models, and the number of users spending more than $1,00,00,000 per quarter on Foundry grew by nearly 80% in the quarter ended December.

Perplexity’s existing cloud relationships
Despite the new Azure partnership, Perplexity continues to rely on Amazon Web Services as its primary cloud provider. The startup’s spokesperson confirmed that AWS remains the preferred infrastructure partner and that additional AWS collaborations are planned.
Impact on Azure AI services
The deal reinforces Microsoft’s strategy to position Azure as a hub for AI applications that draw on diverse model providers. By offering access to OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI models, Azure aims to attract developers seeking a multi vendor environment.
Conclusion
Microsoft’s $750 million Azure agreement with Perplexity AI adds a significant AI workload to its cloud platform, while Perplexity maintains its existing AWS commitments. The partnership broadens Azure’s model portfolio and supports Microsoft’s goal of providing a wide selection of AI services.
