Bangladesh is set to increase its diesel imports from India, with plans to bring in an additional 45,000 tonnes of fuel by April. The move comes as fuel supplies through the Bangladesh–India Friendship Pipeline resume and authorities work to stabilise domestic fuel availability.
Officials from Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) confirmed that 5,000 tonnes of diesel have already arrived from India, with another 5,000 tonnes shipment expected around March 18 or 19.
Md. Murshed Hossain Azad, General Manager (Commercial & Operations) at BPC, said authorities are also processing a proposal to import an additional 40,000 tonnes. Once the required procedures, including opening of the letter of credit, are completed, the fuel consignment is expected to reach Bangladesh by April.
Diesel imports are now being transported through the Bangladesh–India Friendship Pipeline, which connects Numaligarh Refinery Limited in India to the Parbatipur depot in Bangladesh. The pipeline was inaugurated in March 2023 by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, marking a major step in strengthening energy cooperation between the two countries.
Prior to the pipeline’s launch, diesel shipments from India were transported to Bangladesh through railway wagons.
Imports through the pipeline had been temporarily suspended during the interim administration led by Mohammad Yunus. Following the recent election and the formation of a government under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, diesel supplies from India have resumed, beginning with the arrival of the 5,000-tonne shipment.
Fuel demand had recently surged amid tensions in West Asia, leading to long queues at petrol pumps across the country. To manage panic buying, the government had introduced rationing of fuel sales. Authorities have now removed those restrictions ahead of Eid, allowing people to travel from major cities to their hometowns during the festival period.

With diesel imports restarting through the cross-border pipeline and additional shipments planned, Bangladesh aims to strengthen fuel availability while ensuring smoother travel and energy supply ahead of the Eid holiday season.
