In March 2026, nearly 11,000 households in western Odisha reported zero electricity bills after adopting rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, as per PTI report.

This initiative, facilitated by TP Western Odisha Distribution Ltd (TPWODL), has significantly boosted solar adoption in the region.

Significant Impact of Solar Installations

As of March 2026, 18,830 consumers in western Odisha had installed rooftop solar systems. The installations have resulted in 10,885 households achieving zero electricity bills, highlighting the financial benefits of decentralised solar energy.

Approximately 60% of consumers with these installations now receive zero bills, while the remaining 40% have reduced their bills by over 80%.

Financial Assistance and Installation Model

Under the scheme, consumers can install a 3 kW system costing about ₹2,00,000 with financial assistance of up to ₹1,38,000. For a 2 kW system costing ₹1,40,000, subsidies of up to ₹1,10,000 are available.

TPWODL's 1 kW Utility Led Aggregation (ULA) model allows eligible consumers to install rooftop solar by paying only ₹1,875.

The company manages the entire installation process and offers a 5-year warranty on equipment and a 25-year performance warranty on solar panels.

Integration with Smart Meters

All rooftop solar systems are integrated with smart meters to ensure accurate energy accounting and seamless coordination between household consumption and solar generation.

This integration supports efficient energy management and maximises the benefits of solar adoption.

Conclusion

The adoption of rooftop solar systems in western Odisha has led to significant financial savings for nearly 11,000 households. The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, combined with TPWODL's innovative installation model, has facilitated this transition towards sustainable energy consumption.
