The Ministry of Railways has approved the introduction of a hydrogen fuel cell-based DEMU trainset on the Jind-Sonipat section of Northern Railway, as per news reports. The approval covers a 10-car DPRS 1200 KW DEMU rake with a maximum operating speed of 75 kmph.
According to a communication issued by the Railway Board, the approval has been granted with safety-related stipulations for operations on the route. The trainset will run on the dedicated Jind-Sonipat section under Northern Railway.
The hydrogen fuel cell train project is Indian Railways’ plan to introduce alternative fuel technologies in passenger operations. Hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity through a chemical process using hydrogen and oxygen, with water released as a by-product.
Indian Railways has been testing hydrogen-based mobility solutions as part of its wider plan to lower emissions and reduce dependence on diesel-powered rolling stock on select routes.
The Jind-Sonipat section has been identified for deployment of the hydrogen-powered DEMU as part of these trials and operational assessments.
The approval comes alongside an expansion in railway infrastructure spending during FY2025-26. Earlier in April, the Ministry of Railways sanctioned 100 railway projects involving a total investment of ₹1.53 lakh crore.
The ministry said the approved projects together cover more than 6,000 kilometres of railway network expansion.
Compared with FY2024-25, project approvals increased by 56%, while route coverage rose by more than 114%, according to the ministry. Financial allocation for the projects also recorded a rise of over 110% year-on-year.
Maharashtra accounted for 17 approved projects, followed by Bihar with 11, Jharkhand with 10 and Madhya Pradesh with 9 projects.
The ministry said several projects are also focused on improving rail connectivity in remote and tribal regions to support passenger movement, freight transport and access to services across underserved areas.
The hydrogen DEMU approval adds to the ministry’s ongoing rail modernisation and network expansion plans for FY2025-26.
