The Maharashtra government has announced plans to establish a new IT park in Purandar taluka, near the proposed greenfield international airport site. The initiative aims to strengthen the region’s technology ecosystem and reduce pressure on existing IT hubs in Pune.

Industries Minister Uday Samant confirmed that the location has already been identified and discussions have been ongoing for 2 years. The plan marks a significant step in expanding industrial and digital infrastructure in the southern Pune region.

Government Confirms Location and Development Intent

Industries Minister Uday Samant informed the state assembly that the land selected for the project has been finalised. He noted that the proposal has been under active discussion for 2 years, reflecting continued government interest.

The location was chosen to align with broader infrastructure development near the proposed airport. Officials stated that situating the IT park near a future logistics hub could support long‑term economic activity.

Land Transfer to MIDC Expected to Accelerate

Samant added that the chosen land currently falls under the revenue department’s ownership. For development to begin, it must be officially transferred to the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC).

He stated that the transfer process is expected to speed up after the next cabinet meeting. Once the cabinet clears the proposal, MIDC will be authorised to begin planning and execution.

Cost Efficiency Through Use of Government‑Owned Land

Officials highlighted that using government‑owned land will help avoid substantial acquisition costs. Land acquisition for industrial parks often involves compensation, rehabilitation and extended timelines.

By utilising departmental land, the Government expects to streamline the process and reduce delays. This approach aligns with broader efforts to improve project viability and minimise financial overheads.

Timeline Of Discussions and Administrative Actions

The proposal for an IT hub in Purandar has been under consideration for several years. The first formal meeting on the subject took place on July 24, 2024, when Eknath Shinde was chief minister. Minister of State for Industries Indranil Naik informed the assembly that a formal land request was sent to the revenue department on February 27.

The revenue department is expected to place the proposal before the cabinet for approval. Once approved, MIDC will receive the land and initiate development activities, including layout planning and infrastructure preparation.

Conclusion

The plan to create a new IT park in Purandar reflects Maharashtra’s strategy to expand technology infrastructure beyond conventional zones. The Government has identified land, initiated administrative procedures and emphasised cost‑efficient land use.

Key ministers have outlined the steps required before MIDC can formally begin development. With cabinet approval expected as a decisive milestone, the project is positioned to advance into its implementation phase.
