Japan has approved a significant Official Development Assistance (ODA) loan package for India, reinforcing bilateral cooperation while supporting key infrastructure and social sector projects across multiple states, as per ANI reports.

₹16,420 Crore Multi-Sector Funding Boost

The funding commitment amounts to ¥275.858 billion (approximately ₹16,420 crore) and will be directed towards four major projects across urban transport, healthcare, and agriculture.

The agreement was formalised through an exchange of notes between senior officials of both countries, followed by loan agreements with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which will facilitate project execution.

Metro Expansion Drives Urban Mobility Push

A substantial portion of the funding is allocated to metro rail expansion in major cities. The Bengaluru Metro Phase 3 project will receive ¥102.480 billion, aimed at expanding the city’s mass transit network to address rising congestion and mobility demands.

Similarly, the Mumbai Metro Line 11 project has been allocated ¥92.400 billion to strengthen urban transport infrastructure in one of India’s most densely populated cities.

Both projects are expected to reduce traffic congestion, improve urban air quality, and support long-term economic productivity through better connectivity.

Healthcare Infrastructure Strengthening in Maharashtra

Another key component of the funding is focused on healthcare capacity building in Maharashtra, with ¥62.294 billion earmarked for strengthening tertiary care systems.

The initiative will support the development of hospitals, medical colleges and nursing institutions, aiming to enhance both access and quality of healthcare services. It also aligns with broader efforts to advance universal health coverage in the country.

Boost to Sustainable Agriculture in Punjab

The package also includes ¥18.684 billion for promoting sustainable horticulture practices in Punjab.

The project focuses on crop diversification towards high-value produce, strengthening supply chains, and improving farmer incomes.

In addition to economic benefits, the initiative is designed to support environmental sustainability and long-term rural development.

Strategic Partnership Continues to Deepen

India and Japan’s development partnership, which dates back several decades, continues to evolve with a strong focus on infrastructure, sustainability, and capacity building.

This latest funding underscores Japan’s continued role in supporting India’s growth priorities while deepening economic and strategic ties between the 2 countries.
