India-US Trade Deal Reaches Final Stretch, Only 1% of Negotiations Left: US Envoy

The proposed trade agreement between India and the United States has entered its final stage, with only a small part of the negotiations still pending, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said on Tuesday (June 30, 2026).
Speaking at the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum Leadership Summit in Washington, Gor said about 99% of the discussions had been completed. According to him, a few issues remain on both sides before the agreement can be closed.
Negotiations Ongoing for 18 Months
The trade talks have continued for nearly 18 months. Gor said questions are often raised about the time taken to conclude the agreement but pointed out that India and the United States have been trading with each other for around 20 years.
He said agreements covering multiple sectors require detailed negotiations and added that the focus is now on completing the remaining part of the discussions.
The proposed deal is expected to include provisions related to tariffs, market access, and trade between the two countries. However, neither government has shared details of the unresolved issues or indicated when the agreement will be signed.
Comments on India-US Relations
During his address, Gor also referred to the relationship between India and the United States. He said the bilateral partnership continues to receive attention from the leadership of both countries and referred to the engagement between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Quad Meeting Planned
Apart from the trade discussions, Gor said the foreign ministers of the Quad countries are expected to meet in the Philippines in about 2 weeks.
The Quad comprises India, the United States, Japan and Australia and regularly holds meetings on regional security, connectivity and developments in the Indo-Pacific.
