The ePlane Company, an IIT Madras-incubated startup, has unveiled PT-01, India's first full-scale electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft prototype, as per news reports.

The prototype was presented at the company's 60,000 sq ft manufacturing facility on the IIT Madras Discovery Campus.

It will undergo unmanned test flights before moving to the next stages of certification. The company has indicated that commercial operations are planned from 2028, with air ambulance services expected to be the first application.

What is an eVTOL?

An eVTOL is an electric aircraft that can take off and land vertically without using a runway. After take-off, it shifts to forward flight using fixed wings. Unlike conventional aircraft, it can operate from smaller landing areas.

Most eVTOLs use several electric motors and propellers instead of a single rotor or jet engine. The technology is being developed mainly for short-distance urban and regional travel.

How It Works?

The aircraft combines vertical lift with forward flight in a single design. The e200X prototype uses multiple lift rotors and separate propellers for cruising, rather than relying on tilting rotors.

According to the company, the aircraft weighs about 2.2 tonnes, has an eight-metre wingspan, and is to fly up to 110 kilometres on a single charge. It has also been designed to operate from compact locations, including existing hospital helipads.

Why Air Ambulances Come First?

Most companies developing eVTOL aircraft are focusing on medical transport before passenger services. Hospital routes are fixed, landing infrastructure already exists at many locations, and emergency transport requires quicker travel than road networks can often provide.

The ePlane Company has also stated that air ambulances will be its first commercial offering before expanding to airport transfers and passenger operations.

What Needs to Happen Before Passenger Flights?

Commercial passenger services will require aircraft certification, operating approvals, and supporting infrastructure. Dedicated vertiports, charging facilities and air traffic management systems will also be needed.

Battery performance remains another challenge, as current technology limits payload capacity and flying range. Aviation regulators are still developing certification standards for this new category of aircraft.

Conclusion

India's first full-scale eVTOL prototype has entered the testing phase, with certification and regulatory approvals still pending. Commercial services are planned to begin with air ambulances before expanding to passenger transport.
