Paying for a meal, metro ride or shopping trip in Europe could soon become more convenient for Indian travellers. India is exploring the expansion of its Unified Payments Interface (UPI) to more international markets, with Spain and Estonia emerging as the latest countries in discussions for cross-border payment integration.
During Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal's recent visit to Europe, India and Spain agreed to begin technical discussions on enabling interoperability between UPI and Bizum, Spain's popular digital payment platform. Similar discussions with Estonia also included cooperation in fintech and UPI integration. While no launch timeline has been announced, the initiative signals India's continued push to take its digital payment ecosystem global.
If the proposed integration moves forward, Indian travellers may be able to use their UPI-enabled mobile apps to make payments at participating merchants in Spain, just as they do in India.
This could simplify everyday expenses such as paying at restaurants, cafés, retail stores, supermarkets and local transport services. Instead of relying entirely on cash or international credit and debit cards, travellers could have another familiar payment option while abroad.
For frequent travellers, this could also reduce the hassle of currency exchange for smaller purchases and improve the overall travel experience.
The discussions with Spain and Estonia are part of India's broader strategy to expand the international footprint of UPI and strengthen cross-border digital payment infrastructure.
UPI is already available in several countries, including France, Singapore, the UAE, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and Qatar, through partnerships with local payment systems and financial institutions.
By extending these collaborations, India aims to make digital payments more seamless for travellers while showcasing its digital public infrastructure on the global stage.
Although wider UPI acceptance could make international payments more convenient, availability will depend on local merchant participation, banking partnerships and support from payment service providers.
Travellers should also continue carrying international debit or credit cards, as some transactions, such as hotel security deposits, car rentals or high-value purchases, may still require card payments.
Additionally, users should be aware of applicable foreign exchange charges, transaction limits and the terms of international UPI transactions before making payments overseas.

The proposed UPI integration with Spain and ongoing fintech discussions with Estonia mark another step in India's efforts to build a globally connected digital payments network. While the initiative is still in the discussion stage, it has the potential to make overseas spending more convenient for Indian travellers by extending the ease and familiarity of UPI beyond India's borders. As more countries join the network, cross-border digital payments could become simpler, faster and more accessible for millions of Indians travelling abroad.
