India is ready to mark a milestone in sustainable rail transport with the launch of its first hydrogen-powered passenger train.

As per a PTI news report, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the train from Jind in Haryana on July 17, 2026, positioning India alongside nations like Germany, Japan, China, and the US in adopting hydrogen technology for railways.

Introduction of Hydrogen Train in India

The train will operate on the Jind-Sonipat section under Northern Railway and cover an 89-km one-way journey. It is scheduled to make 2 round trips daily, resulting in a total daily coverage of 356 km.

Unlike conventional diesel trains, this train employs hydrogen fuel cells that amalgamate hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity, releasing only water vapour.

Technical Specifications and Features

The 10-coach train, retrofitted from a Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU), comprises 2 driving power cars and 8 passenger coaches.

Capable of accommodating 2,600 passengers with 682 seats, it is designed for a top speed of 110 kmph but will initially run at 75 kmph on the Jind-Sonipat route.

It consumes approximately 300 kg of hydrogen daily under full passenger load and operational conditions.

Manufacturing and Infrastructure

Constructed by the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai and integrated by Medha Servo Drives in Hyderabad, the hydrogen fuel-cell stacks come from Canada's Ballard Power Systems. Indian Railways has set up a hydrogen production, storage, and refuelling facility in Jind capable of producing 420-430 kg of hydrogen per day and storing up to 3,000 kg.

Safety measures include hydrogen leak and flame-detection systems, with regulatory clearance from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO).

Conclusion

India's inaugural hydrogen-powered train will be officiated by PM Modi on July 17, running on the 89-km Jind-Sonipat section. It will have 2 round trips daily, using hydrogen to generate electricity with zero carbon emissions and accommodating about 2,600 passengers. The train, designed by Integral Coach Factory and system-integrated by Medha Servo Drives, proves significant in sustainable transport.
