India's installed non-fossil fuel power generation capacity has crossed 300 GW, Union New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi said on Thursday (August 6, 2026), as per The Business Standard news report.

Speaking at the 7th CII International Energy Conference and Exhibition in New Delhi, he said 30.58 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity was added between January and June 2026. The addition was 25% higher than the capacity added during the same period last year.

Two-Year Growth in Renewable Capacity

The minister said India has added around 90 GW of renewable and other non-fossil fuel-based power generation capacity over the past 2 years. The country has set a target of installing 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.

According to Joshi, the latest figures indicate that capacity addition has continued during the current year as new projects become operational.

Rooftop Solar Programme Expands

Joshi also reviewed the progress of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. More than 50 lakh households have been brought under the scheme so far. Around one lakh households are being added every 6 days.

Daily rooftop solar installations have increased from about 5,000 in October 2025 to more than 16,328 in July 2026, more than three times the earlier pace.

Households Earn Through Surplus Power

The minister said around 19 lakh households covered under the scheme are reporting zero electricity bills. More than 12 lakh households have sold surplus electricity to distribution companies, earning a combined ₹421 crore.

Based on government estimates, the average annual income from surplus electricity sales is about ₹3,500 per household. India's total installed rooftop solar capacity has reached 14 GW.

Call for Greater Investment in Research

Addressing industry representatives, Joshi said investment in research and development would be necessary to support the next phase of renewable energy growth.

He said technology development and innovation would remain important as installed clean energy capacity continues to rise.

Conclusion

Capacity additions during January-June 2026, together with the expansion of rooftop solar installations, have taken India's non-fossil fuel power capacity beyond 300 GW. The government has retained its 2030 capacity target.
