India's Diesel Exports Hit 1-Year High in September 2026 as Shipments to Europe Surge

India's diesel exports climbed to a one-year high in September 2026, with refiners exporting about 620,000 barrels per day (bpd) as overseas this month. As per The Economic Times report, figures from commodity analytics firm Kpler showed that Europe absorbed almost half of those volumes for the month.
Exports to Europe were around 280,000 bpd, nearly triple the volume from August. After a handful of volumes were shipped in the previous trio of months, India exported no diesel to Russia during September 2026.
Europe Takes Larger Share of Indian Diesel
The second largest was Africa, with approximately 200,000 bpd. Roughly 50,000 bpd was directed to Asia and 40,000 bpd to America while lastly another 50,000 bpd went to unidentified destinations.
This boost in European shipments coincided with the tighter diesel supplies in the region, a source of ongoing concern. Saudi refinery disruptions and limited Russian product supplies have kept the pressure on and opened more avenues for Indian refiners to provide in Europe.
Diesel Prices Double from Last Year
Benchmark diesel prices in September were around twice their level a year earlier. Refinery and shipping disruptions in West Asia and Russia contributed to tighter supplies and higher prices.
China banned diesel exports for the month, while G7 countries agreed to release more oil and diesel from storage to help ease fuel prices.
Reliance Main Exporter from India
A windfall tax of about $37 per barrel on diesel exports in September reduced the margins available to exporters. The tax does not apply to Reliance Industries' export-only Jamnagar refinery, which remains India's main diesel exporter.
Nayara Energy and Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals also export some volumes. These refiners, along with Reliance, sell part of their output to Indian Oil, Hindustan Petroleum and Bharat Petroleum for domestic retail sales.
Crude Supply Supports Diesel Production
Higher crude supplies from the Gulf region and Russia are providing Indian refiners with a crude mix that supports middle-distillate production, particularly diesel.
Indian refineries are also generally geared towards relatively high middle-distillate yields, supporting their ability to produce diesel for overseas markets.

Conclusion
India's diesel exports gained pace in September as stronger European demand coincided with tighter regional supplies and higher diesel prices.
