The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has crossed the 60-lakh household mark, taking the government’s rooftop solar programme past 60% of its target of reaching one crore homes.

The scheme has picked up speed considerably since its launch in February 2024. It took 118 days to reach its first lakh households, while the same number is now being added in around six days.

Rooftop Solar Capacity Crosses 17.5 GW

The programme has so far led to 50,99,781 rooftop solar installations, adding 17,855.3 MW of decentralised solar capacity to the grid.

The scheme was launched with an overall outlay of ₹75,021 crore. The government has also been using subsidies and easier financing to bring down the initial cost for households.

More Than 20 Lakh Homes Report Zero Bills

The impact is already showing up in household electricity bills. More than 20.7 lakh beneficiary households have reported zero electricity bills after installing rooftop solar systems.

Households can also send surplus power back to the grid through net metering, allowing them to produce electricity beyond their own consumption.

Vendor Network Expands Alongside Installations

The rooftop programme has created a wider ecosystem around installation and maintenance. More than 37,000 local businesses are now registered as vendors under the scheme.

More than 2.5 lakh people have also been trained through various institutions, against a broader target of three lakh trained personnel. The government estimates that the programme could create around 17 lakh direct and indirect jobs.

Digital Process Helps Speed Up Rollout

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has attributed the faster rollout to digital integration, simpler approvals and a wider DISCOM network.

The national portal is now integrated with more than 80 DISCOMs, while technical-feasibility checks have been waived for rooftop systems of up to 10 kW.

Conclusion

With the 60-lakh household mark crossed, PM Surya Ghar is moving closer to its one-crore target while expanding rooftop solar beyond installations into jobs and local services.
