India's captive and commercial coal mining sector continued its upward trajectory in July 2026, with higher production and dispatch volumes reflecting sustained mining activity, as per a PIB report.
According to the Ministry of Coal, production reached 14.78 million tonnes (MT) during the month, while dispatches stood at 17.49 MT. Coal production also recorded a 9.61% year-on-year increase compared with July 2025.
The Ministry said the latest performance highlights the expanding contribution of captive and commercial mines to India's domestic coal output.
It attributed the growth to improvements in operational efficiency, higher mining productivity and better utilisation of mining capacities across the sector. Monthly dispatches exceeded production, with 17.49 MT of coal supplied during July 2026.
The cumulative performance also showed continued growth.
By the end of July FY27, cumulative coal production had reached 63.16 MT, compared with 59.42 MT in FY26 and 53.72 MT in FY25 for the corresponding period.
Coal dispatches during the same period increased to 70.14 MT, up from 66.02 MT in FY26 and 45.97 MT in FY25.
The Ministry stated that rising production from captive and commercial mines is expected to reduce dependence on imported coal, strengthen supply chain resilience, conserve foreign exchange and support Atmanirbhar Bharat by improving self-reliance in a key raw material for energy security and industrial development.
The Ministry of Coal said it remains focused on unlocking the sector's potential by sustaining production growth, addressing supply-side constraints and improving coal availability to meet the country's growing energy and industrial requirements.
