The Indian government is moving towards establishing a comprehensive legal framework for companies operating in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector. This initiative aims to create clear boundaries and regulatory sandboxes for AI products and services, ensuring compliance with domestic laws.

Establishing Clear Boundaries for AI Operations

The newly formed Artificial Intelligence Governance and Economic Group (AIGEG) is spearheading the development of a unified legal framework for AI companies.

This framework will apply to all firms offering AI tools and services in India, including developers of large and small language models and chatbot systems.

The aim is to address the unique challenges presented by AI technologies, which differ from those faced by traditional internet companies.

According to officials, the framework will ensure that AI companies are held accountable and adhere to domestic regulations.

This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance India's AI capabilities while safeguarding against potential risks.

Focus Areas and Strategic Funding

In addition to regulatory measures, the AIGEG plans to refine India's AI strategy by directing significant funding towards a limited number of use cases.

These use cases are expected to deliver measurable outcomes within 12 to 18 months, with priority sectors likely to include healthcare, agriculture, and education.

Reskilling and upskilling initiatives will also be prioritised to mitigate potential job losses. Broader consultations with industry groups and companies will help identify impacted job profiles and develop effective retraining programmes.

Formation of the AIGEG and Expert Committee

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) announced the formation of the 10-member AIGEG earlier this month. Chaired by the Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, the group includes key government officials and experts from various sectors.

A separate Technology and Policy Expert Committee has also been established to support the AIGEG. This committee comprises representatives from academia and industry bodies, providing technical and policy expertise on AI governance.

Conclusion

India's initiative to create a legal framework for AI companies reflects its commitment to harnessing AI technology responsibly. By establishing clear regulations and focusing on strategic sectors, the government aims to balance innovation with oversight.
