Piyush Goyal, Union Commerce and Industry Minister, said the India-Oman Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement is likely to come into force from June 1, 2026, as India continues expanding its international trade partnerships, as per news reports.

India-Oman CEPA Nears Implementation

Speaking on the sidelines of the CII Annual Business Summit 2026, Goyal said discussions with Oman’s negotiating team progressed positively and the free trade agreement is now expected to become operational from June 1.

The India-Oman Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement was signed on December 18, 2025. Earlier in the day, the minister described his meeting with Pankaj Khimji, Adviser for Foreign Trade and International Cooperation at Oman’s Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, as “productive”.

According to Goyal, the discussions focused on strengthening bilateral economic cooperation, improving connectivity and logistics linkages, facilitating trade flows, and exploring additional partnership opportunities under the CEPA framework.

India-Chile FTA Talks Face Challenges

While updating on India’s broader trade talks, Goyal said discussions on a free trade agreement with Chile are facing challenges due to the differing sizes of the two economies and the scale of opportunities available to both countries.

“There are some challenges, given the very different sizes of the economies and different scales of opportunities that both countries offer to each other,” Goyal said, adding that both sides are trying to resolve the differences through “innovative solutions”.

Critical Minerals Key to Chile Trade Deal

Goyal also indicated that access to critical minerals and additional concessions could play an important role in finalising a future agreement with Chile.

“If we get a good deal on critical minerals and other important concessions, then maybe there is a very good possibility that we should be able to finalise an FTA with Chile too,” he said. The minister had earlier held discussions with Chile’s foreign minister regarding the proposed agreement.
