The Centre has identified imports worth $51 billion as critical for domestic manufacturing under an internal review of India's import basket, according to The Reuters report.

The exercise examined imports that could be produced locally over time. Around 100 products from the identified list have been marked for the first round of action, the sources said.

$775 Billion Import Bill Assessed

India imported goods worth $775 billion in the 12 months ended March 2026. The government review found that imports valued at around $398 billion have the potential to be replaced through domestic production.

Within this, the $51 billion category consists of products used as key manufacturing inputs across different industries rather than finished goods.

Products Across Manufacturing Sectors

The identified items are used in sectors including textiles, footwear, electric vehicles, and solar equipment. Officials said these products were selected because they are required across manufacturing supply chains and have scope for higher domestic production.

The initial list covers products considered important for industrial output.

Supply Chain Concerns

The review has been carried out against the backdrop of supply chain disruptions linked to geopolitical developments. Government sources said reducing dependence on imported inputs, particularly from China, was one of the factors considered during the exercise.

Another consideration was whether domestic production could become commercially viable through existing production-linked incentives and other government support measures.

Immediate Focus on 100 Products

As per the report, work will begin with about 100 products from the identified list before additional items are taken up. The sources declined to be named because the exercise has not been made public.

The review is one of several ongoing assessments examining areas where domestic manufacturing capacity can be expanded to reduce import dependence over the longer term.

Conclusion

The government has completed the identification of critical import items for domestic production, with the first list covering about 100 products. Further measures are likely to be taken based on the findings of the review.
