The government has officially notified the 33 questions that citizens will be required to answer during the houselisting and housing enumeration phase of Census 2027. This phase will be conducted over a 30‑day period selected individually by each state and Union Territory between April 1 and September 30, 2026.
The schedule marks the beginning of the Census 2027 process, which is part of an ₹11,718‑crore national operation covering both housing and population enumeration. The previous Census conducted in 2011 recorded the nation’s population at 1,210.19 million, comprising 623.72 million males and 586.46 million females.
The government’s questionnaire for the houselisting phase includes a detailed set of 33 items designed to capture essential information about housing structures. Enumerators will record the building number assigned by municipal or local authorities along with the census house number used for enumeration.
They will gather information on the materials used in house flooring and roofing, allowing authorities to assess construction quality across regions. The condition of each house will also be documented to provide insights into the structural state of residential buildings nationwide.
The schedule will capture demographic information, including the sex of the household head, which enables classification of household leadership roles. Enumerators will also record whether the household head belongs to the Scheduled Castes, the Scheduled Tribes, or other communities.
The questionnaire further seeks ownership details, identifying whether the house is owned, rented, or occupied under other arrangements. The number of married couples residing in the household will also be documented, contributing to a clearer understanding of family composition and household structure.
The Census questions address access to amenities by collecting information about the main source of drinking water and the primary source of lighting. Households will be asked about their sanitation arrangements, including the type of latrine available and the outlet for wastewater disposal.
Details regarding the availability of a bathing facility, the presence of a kitchen, and access to LPG or PNG connections will be collected to assess living standards. The questionnaire also includes a question on the main type of cereal consumed by the household, offering insight into basic dietary patterns.

The houselisting phase of Census 2027 will run between April and September 2026 across various states and Union Territories. With 33 structured questions, the government aims to compile comprehensive data on housing conditions, amenities, assets, and household demographics.
The information collected will form the foundation for the population enumeration scheduled for February 2027. The exercise will provide an updated national dataset, building on the last enumeration from Census 2011.
