Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will start a hydrogen-powered shuttle bus service in the Central Vista area from Friday, as per PTI reports. The service has been introduced to provide last-mile connectivity between metro stations and government offices in the administrative district of the national capital.

The buses will operate between Central Secretariat Metro Station and Seva Teerth Metro Station. The route covers several government offices and public buildings frequently accessed by employees and visitors during working hours.

Timings and Route Coverage

According to DMRC, the service will run on all working days from Monday to Friday, excluding gazetted holidays. Bus operations have been scheduled during office timings between 8:30 am and 12:30 pm and again from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm.

2 buses will be deployed on the route with a frequency of one trip every 30 minutes. One vehicle will move clockwise while the second bus will cover the route in the opposite direction.

The route includes Kartavya Bhawan, Vigyan Bhawan, Nirman Bhawan, Akbar Road, Baroda House, National Stadium, National Gallery of Modern Art, India Gate and nearby office complexes in the Central Vista area.

Fare and Operational Details

Indian Oil Corporation Limited has supplied 2 hydrogen-fuelled buses for the service. Each bus has a seating capacity of 35 passengers.

The buses are equipped with GPS tracking systems and CCTV cameras for monitoring and passenger safety. DMRC will manage ticketing, operations, and passenger support, while IOCL will provide hydrogen fuel and drivers.

Passengers can make payments through National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), UPI and cash. DMRC has fixed stage-based fares at ₹10 and ₹15.

Push to Reduce Fuel Consumption

The launch follows recent measures announced by the Centre to encourage lower fuel consumption amid global energy concerns linked to tensions in West Asia.

On May 11, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to reduce the use of petrol and diesel vehicles and increase the use of metro services, carpooling, and electric vehicles. He also referred to work-from-home arrangements and railway parcel movement as ways to reduce fuel demand and conserve foreign exchange.
