Bank branches across India are largely closed today, April 14, 2026, on account of Ambedkar Jayanti, a gazetted holiday observed under the RBI’s Negotiable Instruments Act. The day marks the birth anniversary of B. R. Ambedkar, and is widely observed across the country.
The holiday also coincides with several regional festivals such as Tamil New Year's Day, Baisakhi, and Bohag Bihu, leading to widespread closures of public institutions.
Bank branches are shut today in several key cities including Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad, among others.
Other cities where banks remain closed include Chandigarh, Jaipur, Lucknow, Patna, Kochi, Guwahati, and Bhubaneswar, reflecting a near pan-India shutdown of physical banking services.
Despite the widespread holiday, bank branches are operational in select locations such as New Delhi, Bhopal, Raipur, Shillong, and Shimla, as per the RBI holiday calendar.
These exceptions are based on regional observances and state-specific holiday schedules.
While physical branches are closed in most regions, customers can continue to access banking services through digital channels. Internet banking, mobile banking, UPI payments, and ATM services remain fully functional.
This ensures uninterrupted access to essential financial services, including fund transfers and cash withdrawals.

With banks closed across most parts of India today for Ambedkar Jayanti, customers are advised to rely on digital banking platforms for their transactions. Normal banking operations will resume on the next working day, while services in select cities remain available based on local holiday schedules.
