The Odisha Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, has approved a significant investment of ₹3,400 crore to enhance the state's public transport infrastructure through the Atal Bus Stand (ABS) scheme by FY32, as per news reports.

Atal Bus Stand Scheme Overview

The Atal Bus Stand scheme aims to establish modern, well-equipped bus stands across Odisha. These will be located at district headquarters, sub-divisional headquarters, block headquarters, urban local bodies, and key tourist and strategic locations.

The initiative seeks to improve commuter facilities and integrate bus stand operations under a unified framework.

All bus stands under the scheme will be formally designated as public transport infrastructure, allowing usage by both government and private bus operators.

This integration aims to streamline service delivery and ensure uniform standards in development, renovation, operation, maintenance, and management.

Implementation and Management

The Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC), under the Commerce and Transport department, will oversee the implementation of the scheme.

The project is designed to foster social cohesion, stimulate economic activity, and promote inclusive development while maintaining environmental sustainability.

Classification and Financial Strategies

Bus stands will be categorised into ‘A’, ‘B’, and ‘C’ classes based on passenger demand, traffic volume, and regional requirements.

This classification ensures that facilities are tailored to the scale and significance of each location.

The scheme also focuses on improving operational and management efficiency, enhancing financial strategies, and boosting revenue.

Conclusion

The Odisha government's investment in the Atal Bus Stand scheme represents a comprehensive approach to modernising public transport infrastructure. By integrating bus stands under a unified management framework, the initiative aims to enhance commuter convenience and streamline operations across the state.
