Amazon India has expanded the reach of its dedicated cargo network Amazon Air by introducing a new flight route connecting Guwahati and Kolkata, aiming to improve delivery speeds and logistics efficiency in the Northeast. The company said the new route is expected to significantly accelerate shipments and strengthen connectivity with the region.
Amazon Air was launched in 2023 as part of the company’s effort to build a dedicated air cargo network for faster movement of shipments across the country.
Initially, the service connected major logistics hubs including Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru.
With the addition of the Guwahati route, the company aims to strengthen its logistics network in the Northeast and improve order fulfilment times. Amazon said the expanded air cargo operations could help increase delivery speed by up to 5 times for shipments in the region.
The improved connectivity will support deliveries across the seven northeastern states including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura.
The first Amazon Air flight to Guwahati was flagged off from Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi by Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu.
Regional authorities said the expanded logistics infrastructure could improve market access for local businesses and strengthen the region’s participation in India’s digital economy.
The addition of Amazon Air services in Guwahati is expected to improve access for regional sellers to customers across India. With faster fulfilment capabilities, businesses in the Northeast will be able to expand their market reach and engage more actively in the country’s growing digital commerce ecosystem. The improved logistics network is also expected to enable quicker and more dependable deliveries for customers and communities throughout Assam and the broader Northeast region.
"Such advancements in logistics infrastructure are also expected to generate substantial employment opportunities for local youth. It is hoped that the operationalisation of Amazon Air services will further contribute to job creation and support the overall economic growth of the region," Ravi Kota, IAS, Chief Secretary, Assam, said.
Apart from operating its own dedicated cargo aircraft, Amazon India also utilises cargo capacity from other domestic airlines to support its logistics network.
