India's advanced air mobility sector is gaining a new healthcare-focused initiative, with Air India partnering Japan's SkyDrive and Suzuki Motor Corporation to evaluate the use of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, as per news reports.
Under the MoU, the companies will explore deploying electric aircraft to move high-value and time-critical medical supplies, keeping the proposed use case centred on healthcare logistics rather than passenger air taxi operations.
The proposed model aims to bypass severe road congestion and reduce transit times for critical healthcare supplies.
By using aerial mobility for time-sensitive deliveries, the partners are examining ways to improve last-mile emergency logistics and strengthen India's medical infrastructure.
The feasibility study will combine SkyDrive's eVTOL technology, Air India's aviation expertise and Suzuki's understanding of the Indian market.
Air India will contribute its operational capabilities, airport infrastructure knowledge and stakeholder relationships to help develop a framework for safe, reliable and scalable eVTOL operations.
Suzuki already has a business and technology partnership with SkyDrive for eVTOL development.
Ramesh Mamidala, Head of Cargo at Air India, described advanced air mobility as a "natural extension" of India's transport ecosystem.
Tomohiro Fukuzawa, Founder and CEO of SkyDrive, said transporting critical medical supplies through eVTOLs could "reshape medical infrastructure."
Masao Fujitani, Executive General Manager, Next Generation Business Development at Suzuki Motor Corporation, said Suzuki aims to develop "infrastructure mobility" through such collaborations.
Air India's move broadens the Tata Group airline's activities beyond conventional passenger and cargo operations into electric aircraft applications.
Elsewhere, InterGlobe Enterprises, IndiGo's parent, has partnered with US-based Archer Aviation for an all-electric air taxi network. An IndiGo group company has also joined Bengaluru-based Sarla Aviation to explore electric air taxis.
These projects largely focus on urban passenger mobility, while the Air India-led initiative targets medical logistics.
