LPG prices in India are influenced by international benchmark rates and the rupee-dollar exchange rate.
The price of LPG in India is determined by state-run oil marketing companies and revised monthly. Key factors influencing LPG prices include international benchmark LPG rates, global crude oil prices, and the exchange rate between the Indian rupee and the US dollar.
Since LPG is used in almost every household in India, any change in its price directly affects household budgets. Hotels, restaurants and small businesses also rely heavily on LPG for cooking and other operational needs, making price revisions significant for both consumers and businesses.
Domestic LPG cylinders, typically weighing 14.2 kg, are primarily used in households for cooking purposes. Commercial LPG cylinders, which weigh 19 kg, are used by businesses such as restaurants, food stalls, hotels and catering services.
Commercial cylinders are generally priced higher than domestic cylinders because they are not covered by government subsidies. The higher pricing structure reflects the market-linked cost of fuel used for business purposes.
The Government of India continues to provide subsidies on domestic LPG cylinders to eligible consumers. Under the subsidy scheme, the subsidy amount is directly credited to the beneficiary’s bank account after the purchase of the cylinder.
Typically, each household is eligible to receive up to 12 subsidised LPG cylinders per year. Any additional cylinders must be purchased at the prevailing market price.
LPG, or Liquefied Petroleum Gas, is produced during natural gas processing and crude oil refining. It is separated from natural gas through refrigeration techniques and extracted from heated crude oil using a distillation process.
The fuel mainly consists of propane, butane and isobutane. Once produced, LPG is stored in pressurised containers such as cylinders or large storage tanks for safe transportation and distribution.
The LPG price adjustments as of March 13, 2026, reflect the ongoing changes in the global market and currency exchange rates. Consumers should stay informed about these changes, as they directly affect household and commercial budgets.
