Aviation stocks showed mixed performance on Friday, May 9, 2025, following widespread disruptions in flight operations due to the temporary closure of several airports across northern, western, and central India under heightened security amid Operation Sindoor.

Massive Flight Cancellations Across India and Pakistan

27 airports, including key hubs like Amritsar, have been closed to commercial flights until May 10 due to escalating border tensions. Authorities implemented the closures to ensure public safety amid fears of further escalation.

The shutdown led to the cancellation of approximately 430 flights in India, around 3% of the country’s scheduled air traffic. In Pakistan, over 147 flights were scrapped, impacting nearly 17% of daily operations.

Stock Market Reaction to Flight Disruptions

On May 9, 2025, SpiceJet share price (BSE: SPICEJET) opened at ₹41.60, lower than its previous close at ₹42.79. At 2.59 PM, the share price of Spicejet was trading at ₹42.73, down by 0.16% on BSE.

InterGlobe Aviation share price (BSE: INDIGO), opened at ₹4955.50, lower than its previous close at ₹5145.10. At 3 PM, the share price of InterGlobe Aviation was trading at ₹5085.00, down by 1.17% on BSE.

Security Tightened Across Indian Airports

In response to the elevated threat level, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) mandated Secondary Ladder Point Checks (SLPC) at all airports. This additional screening measure, conducted by airline staff near boarding gates or aerobridges, adds a layer of security on top of the routine CISF checks.

Conclusion

With airport closures continuing through May 10, the aviation sector faces ongoing volatility. Passenger inconvenience and stock fluctuation are expected to persist until normal operations resume.
